Labor Party Republican Policy
Labor Party Republican Policy
The Hon Anthony Albanese MP
Prime Minister of Australia
Office of the Prime Minister
PO Box 6022
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600
Dear Prime Minister,
We write to acknowledge your recent comments following your meeting with His Majesty King Charles III at Balmoral Castle, where you reaffirmed your support for Australia’s existing institutions and confirmed that no referendum on a republic will be held during your current term in office.
Your remarks reflect a continuation of the approach taken by your predecessors, Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, and stand in contrast to the formal policy of the Australian Labor Party, which advocates for constitutional reform toward a republic. Given this longstanding inaction, we respectfully suggest that the ALP reconsider its policy position and remove references to a republic from its constitution and platform.
In light of your commitment to uphold Australia’s institutions, we accordingly request that you call for the removal of the ALP’s republic policy from its official documents.
We trust you will give these matters due consideration in the spirit of national unity and respect for our constitutional heritage.
Yours sincerely,
