The Wattle Crown has been published to honour Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee. Serving for 70 years, Her Majesty has been our sovereign Lady for over half of our existence as an independent, federated nation.
Now aged 96, she is also the oldest and longest-serving monarch in British history.
Australia has only had nine kings and queens since Britain claimed sovereignty over it and established its first settlement in 1788. Three of these monarchs were long living. George III reigned for 60 years. His granddaughter, Victoria, reigned for 64 years and now her great-great-granddaughter has reigned for 70.
These three monarchs, in particular, have overseen Australia established as the first ever nationhood established on the basis of a set of humanitarian rules being the instructions provided by King George III. From the humblest of beginnings, Australia has developed from an isolated shantytown-like settlement to a vibrant, modern and economically accomplished nation.
This booklet has been written to provide a guide on the benevolent, Christian, manner in which the British kings and queens guided Australia from the edicts to Governor Philip of
George III to the guiding hand of our present Queen who has been our sovereign Lady for over half of our existence as an independent, federated nation.
From 1788 the British kings and queens ruled over Australia but, following the implementation and of the Australian Constitution in 1901, that rule gradually changed from one of rule to a situation where the monarch reigned and the people ruled through its elected parliament and government. The title of the monarch also changed, firstly indirectly with Australia mentioned by George VI and Queen Elizabeth II in their Coronation Oaths and then directly from 1973 when the Australian government enacted a special Royal Style and Titles Act declaring that the Queen was Queen of Australia.
Although the Queen is also the monarch of 14 other nations, including the United Kingdom, her role as Queen of Australia is now compartmentalised and subject solely to the Australian constitution and the Australian people.
The Queen has visited Australia on sixteen occasions, 1954, 1963, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1977, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1992, 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2011.
This book takes us on the journey of these visits including many notable achievements made during them.
As we celebrate the long life and the long reign of a lady who has become beloved to us all, we hope that you will find this booklet interesting and enjoyable as we commence our journey with the first visit of a reigning monarch to our shores in 1954.
