Sir Harry Gibbs was born in 1917 and was educated at the Ipswich Grammar School and the University of Queensland. He was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1939 and immediately served in the army from 1939 to 1945, rising to the rank of Major.
He was mentioned in dispatches and after the war resumed his practice at the Bar.
He became Queen's Counsel and was appointed successively to the Supreme Court of Queensland, the Federal Court of Bankruptcy and the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory.
He was appointed to the High Court of Australia of which he later became Chief Justice. He retired from that position and the High Court in 1987.
He is a member of the Foundation Council of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy.
