Introduction To The Convention

DESCRIPTION OF THE

THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION

In February 1998 there shall gather together in Canberra 152 persons – 76 elected and 76 appointed – to deliberate upon the constitutional future of this great nation.

Of the 76 appointed delegates, 40 will be parliamentarians selected from the Federal Parliament and from each of the States and Territories.

The 76 elected positions have been apportioned amongst delegates in accordance with population levels in each State ranging from 20 delegates from New South Wales to 2 each for the ACT and the Northern Territory.

The Monarchist League is standing candidates in several States for the Convention for no other reason than to ensure that every vote possible is secured in support of our Constitution – for if we lose the Convention, it will set in train a process which could ultimately lead to the loss of our Constitution.

The draftsmen of the Constitution, rightly called the "Founding Fathers", were brilliant in their farsightedness. They created a form of Government which took the best from the Westminster System, from Canada, the United States and from Switzerland, two of which were monarchical and two republican.

Drafted by Australians for Australians and voted upon by the People of Australia, our Constitution is a perfect blend of democratic ideals and built-in safeguards for it made possible the taking away from the wearer of the Crown of Great Britain all Authority except the power to appoint and to dismiss the Governor General thus bringing that act into the public domain and away from the murky corridors of political manipulations and intrigue and to place the hitherto executive role of the Monarch and the British Government into the hands of a Governor General for decades an Australian appointed by an independent, autonomous and self-ruling Australian Government.

No other method of Government has ever been able to ensure the constitutional stability and continuity of the life of the nation

Republicans have no alternative other than to put a politician - who by his very nature will be biased, in place of the Sovereign who has no political party to obey only Her desire to see to the well-being of Her Peoples.

Even though a President may be selected from outside the political spectrum, he or she will need to receive the support of the Parliaments and would therefore owe existence to those who would lobby on his or her behalf within the Parliaments. The Sovereign owes no allegiance to any particular person or organisation, only to the People. It was to prevent Parliament from replacing the Crown with one of their own that the Founding Fathers ensured that the position of the Sovereign was inviolate except upon change of the Constitution by referendum of the People.

As far as the future is concerned, who can possibly tell what the twenty first century may bring. However if you allow the Constitution to be changed just because you may be disappointed with the performance of The Queen’s children or because, due to a deliberate lack of civics education in Australia’s educational process, not many young people are aware of the relevance of the Crown in our Constitution, - or even worse because the media and some politicians wish someone other than The Queen to open the Sydney Olympics - not only will the heritage passed on to us by our Founding Father’s be betrayed, but also more importantly, the future security of our children and their children and their children’s children, could well be placed in jeopardy.

In casting your vote in favour of a Monarchist League candidate, you will help elect a delegate who will be emphatically for the Constitution. We are resolutely against change, we are resolutely against compromise, for we are Australians protecting the Constitution.
